Hello readers, so in my last blog post, I talked about the many babywearing myths and the truths behind them. So basically, it’s all about wearing your baby the right way or rather, the safe way. And that’s what made me write this article, to make it a bit more clear.
So yes, there will be people around to make you feel weird, to make you feel confused while babywearing. Just ignore them all. Focus on these safety standards that should be followed while babywearing. TICKS, it is.
Whatever the type of baby carrier is, you should make sure that you have worn your baby tight and close. It should not be too tight or too loose. Make sure both you and your baby are comfortable! There should be enough air circulation even though the baby is kept close. Make sure you adjust the buckles/rings of the carrier to the correct fitness.
IN VIEW ALL THE TIME:
Make sure that you can see your baby while babywearing. That allows you to observe your baby all the time.
CLOSE ENOUGH TO KISS:
You should be able to kiss your baby while babywearing, this is the optimal distance advised. Basically, your chin should be almost near to the baby’s head and you could easily kiss the baby on the forehead.
KEEP CHIN OFF THE CHEST:
Keep the baby’s chin lifted off their chest in order to allow enough air passage and thereby giving them proper breathing.
Make sure that the baby’s hips are very well supported. They should be carried in such a way that their legs, knees and the bottom should create an ‘M’ position. In that way, all the weight will come to the bottom of the baby and not on their legs.
There are a couple of other factors as well which I keep in mind while babywearing:
- One is to ensure the quality of the baby carrier. I vouch for Soul Slings’ fabric quality hence I never had to worry about that matter. They have amazingly amazing fabrics and colour combinations and what not! I just go aww with many of their carriers, especially the latest linen collection. If you haven’t yet, you should check it out here. Also, they currently have a sale on a selected range of Onbuhimos. Do not forget to check that too.
- Make sure that you do not babywear while travelling in a vehicle.
Note: These are just guidelines. Each carrier is different and they all come up with their own instruction manuals. Make sure you follow that too.
